We'll Miss You, Addison

We'll Miss You, Addison
Originally uploaded by Car2nGrl.
Around 10 o'clock this evening, Addison passed away. He would have been 3 years old this September.

I guess I should be thankful for the time I did have with him. He was the sweetest little thing. Always thoughtful and patient, even for such a young boy. I'll always remember him in his front yard, swinging their tire swing -- laughing while asking to be pushed higher and higher.

In the end, however, I can't help but feel cheated. I wish his life wouldn't have ended like this.

Holding out for hope

Addison's vitals were looking a bit better this morning so we all can't help but hope that this may be the turning point. Please keep thinking positive thoughts for Addison.

No easy way to say goodbye

I got the call from Chris around 2 in the afternoon. Addison went into arrest. He may go anytime now.

I dropped everything and headed for UCLA with Parker in tow. On the way, I picked up Chris from work.

Entering the ICU, we saw Addison lying unresponsive in his bed, trapped behind an unfamiliar, swollen face that masked the little boy we all love so dearly. Tubes were everywhere, connecting him to a growing arsenal of life support machinery. At the foot of his bed, Eric and Amy wept as their greatest fear became more of a reality.

In some ways, this reminded me of my father's last days in the ICU. You're filled with utter despair and helplessness as the situation refuses to turnaround. You wonder what good is modern science if it doesn't help you when you need it most? Eventually, you're forced to decided whether or not to let go. But how? With my father, we chose to remove him from life support based on the man he was and what we believed he would have wanted. A tough decision but still a hundred times easier than the decision Eric and Amy have to make. Addison is just under 3 years old. He hasn't grown, seen the world, or defined his perspective on life. There's no easy way to let go, especially after fighting so hard for so long.

The doctors have suggested they wait 24 hours before making any decision.

I guess this is it. A last chance for God and science. Will either answer our prayers?

I've got mine...what about you?

Yes...I've purchased the latest Harry Potter book and it arrived today in the mail. However, I'm not going to start reading it until I've finished "Kite Runner", the book that I'm currently reading for my book club. *GASP* I know. I'm sure my former HP collegues are turning their backs on me in shame; however, my book club is meeting next week and I'm not even close to finishing the book so I need to demonstrate restraint and focus on the book at hand.

The fire has been contained. Luckily, it didn't get much farther than what was depicted in the last post. Plus, with the wind blowing away from us, we were left with no smokey smell. Nice! :o)

Addison Update

A few of you have asked for an update on Addison. Unfortunately, things haven't gotten better for the little guy. Currently, he's in the ICU suffering from complications from the second bone marrow transplant and he needs platelet donations. (Normally, I would now start asking for A positive donors but the doctors want to utilize a steady supply from family to minimize complications. However, if you're A positive and willing to be a regular donor for Addison, let me know...you never know if your services may become necessary.)

The Bakersfield Californian ran this story a couple of weeks ago. (See below.) It also included a picture, but I couldn't bear posting it. Addison's appearance has changed so much since when I last saw him a few months ago; it absolutely crushes me. I can't help but selfishly thank God Parker's healthy. Then again, we thought Addison was healthy when he was Parker's age. Oy...don't get me started. Worrying becomes a vicious cycle.

Once again, please keep Addison in your thoughts and prayers.

'He's such a trooper': Boy battles bubble boy disease
Tehachapi toddler battling illness known as bubble boy disease at UCLA Medical Center
By NADA BEHZIZ, Californian staff writer

Addison Trillo almost never cries. The 30-month-old Tehachapi boy loves giving hugs and always has a faint smile when he wakes from his medication.

Addison takes 20 medications a day and just had his second bone marrow transplant. "He's such a trooper. He's our hero. You can kick him to the ground and he can get right back up," said Amy Trillo, Addison's mother.

He's been at UCLA Medical Center for six months suffering from Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder, better known as the bubble boy disease.

People with the disease have low levels of T-cells, white blood cells that fight off infections. Without enough T-cells, the body cannot resist infections that can often result in death.

Usually, the disorder is treated with bone marrow transplants.

In one rare case in the 1970s, an infant lived in a plastic bubble to avoid germs when a marrow match wasn't found. But Addison doesn't live in a plastic bubble like the famed David Vetter, who lived in his germ-free bubble for 12 years.

In fact, Vetter was the only boy with the disease who ever lived in a plastic bubble.

Instead doctors are treating Addison with transplants using his father's marrow, hoping to build up his immune system so it can fight off infections. The prognosis isn't good.

The first transplant in February failed and there are complications with the second transplant.

His old T-cells and the new ones still are fighting to take over his body.

If this battle doesn't end in victory, it means round three of transplants.

"The minute you get excited and optimistic, something else bad happens," Mrs. Trillo said. "We're hoping we're not going to have to go through the third bone marrow transplant."

Addison's life is bleak. He has been confined to a bed in a Los Angeles hospital for six months. There are no children to play with. His only friend is his overstuffed blue rabbit, which sits on his bed. Mom stays with him most days and drives back to Tehachapi regularly. Dad comes when he can.

The toddler is so weak from infections that he cannot speak. When his father calls from Tehachapi and wraps up with a "I love you," Addison cannot answer back.

Research shows that about one in every 100,000 to 500,000 babies have the disease. But experts say the disorder is more common than that because many patients die before the disease is recognized.

Some experts say a simple, inexpensive blood test performed at birth to screen for immune disorders could dramatically increase chances of survival for babies born with the disease.

"The disease is a pediatric emergency," said Rebecca Buckley, a professor of Duke University Medical Center's division of pediatric allergy and immunology. "There is no screening for any primary immunodeficiency disease at birth or during childhood and adulthood in any country."

The National Human Genome Research Institute has developed a new test that detects the disease.

In Addison's case, it took almost a year for him to be properly diagnosed.

His parents took him to a number of doctors before he was diagnosed with the disease at UCLA in January.

"He was falling apart and they couldn't tell me what it was," Mrs. Trillo said. "My kid was dying and you're not going to sit around, you're gonna want a second opinion."

If a third transplant is necessary in Addison's case, doctors will draw from an umbilical cord blood bank instead of using his father's marrow.

Umbilical cord blood, routinely discarded after birth, is rich in stem cells, which can be used to treat many disorders such as Addison's.

Even without the third transplant, doctors expect Addison to stay in the hospital for at least two months to get his immune system up to speed.

If the transplants fail, doctors can't say what will happen to him.

So far, he keeps pulling through, and his parents plan to keep giving him the chance to do that.

"You have those moments that you get really down, but we can't lose him now," Mrs. Trillo said. "It's not going to happen to him, that kid has suffered too much."

And I thought he was becoming...god forbid...a fussy eater. Looks like we'll be moving Parker's feedings out of the TV room and to a place a bit more boring.

As for rolling over, Parker still hasn't made the tummy to back transition. However, while on his back, he is very adept at rolling from side to side. I guess, you've got to embrace the baby steps.

Being a bad mommy and host, I forgot to take pictures of the pool party so I have nothing to show you guys. However, I must say, it was a very fun party. Lots of fun in the water and we even got a rip-roaring game of poker going. As for Parker...well he was just his usual charming self. He hung out with everyone. At times, when I stopped to catch my breath I would wonder..."Hmmmm, now where's my baby?" (Again...bad mommy!) But have no fear, he was usually smiling away in someone's arms. (He's such a flirt!)

Well, I guess that's the update for now. My mom flies into town today so Parker's going to get some good ahmah ("grandma" in Chinese) time.

Rachael's Fine

For those of you who know her, I thought I'd share this note that I received from Rachael...

I just wanted to let you know that I'm fine.

For those who don't know I now work in central London at Nickelodeon a few streets away from 2 of the explosion sites. Luckily all of our company has been accounted for and everyone is fine. The police have given us the okay now to leave the building if absolutely necessary - a nice reassurance that I will be allowed to go home at some point.

I was walking from my train station to the underground when we heard that it was closed. With no more information, I met up with a colleague and walked the rest of the way to work. It was only as we got to work and were immediately checked in and told that we were now quarantined inside that we were made aware of what happened and began to watch the tv.

Just as those who've been through similar events experienced, the city is eerily quiet with very little traffic or people on the road and the sirens are blaring. However life goes on and despite the underground and buses still not running, the major train stations have started to open again though with delays of course. Everyone has rallied together and the spirit is high in a 'we'll get through this' sort of sense.

As I believe I've mentioned to most of you, much of my day I'm face with Frankie BEGGING me to play fetch. Unfortunately, there's only so much fetch I can play, especially if I'm going to get anything else done...like take care of Parker.

That said, I figured I should enlist others to play fetch with Frankie. So how about this...When ever you have a free moment, why don't you click the link and play fetch with Frankie. I know he'll love it and trust me, he'll never get tired of chasing that ball.

It was an extra special day because Parker had a poo when he got home. (Insert work/poo joke here.) And you know how I like it when my baby's regular.

Moving Pictures

Well, I think I may have finally broken the video barrier. I found a great site -- freevlog.org -- that walked me through the process. I think all I need to do now is figure out how to res down the video because this first video is almost 4MB -- and for you people with a slow internet connection I know that means an eternity to download.

Anyway, enjoy this first film. This is the movie on which the index print from June 3rd was based. As of yet, we still haven't achieved "roll over". :o( But we're working on it.

BTW, this was taken with my digital camera; consequently, there's no sound.

I guess it's sort of like learning to work that crane machine in the arcade. You know the one. That three fingered claw that you think you can use to nab you a cute stuffed animal that, $30 later, isn't as cheap as you thought it would be. Luckily for Parker, I'm letting him work his "claw" for free.

In this shot, he's grabbing for Poo Cow -- the rattle that I use to distract him during diaper changes and our totem that we like to think keeps him regular. (I guess you can call it a motivational tool but I think Poo Cow's "poos" -- instead of "moos" -- really inspires the little guy.)

By the way, I know I'm biased but I think we may have a little lefty on our hands. He does seem to favor that hand. Of course that could be my influence -- I tend to hold him with my left arm (stifling the mobility of his right arm) and when I change him his left side is closest to me (which probably draws his attention/focus to that side). I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Oh where, oh where...

Oh where, oh where...
Originally uploaded by Car2nGrl.
I let Frankie out for his usual play time with Kitty, our neighbor's dog. However, when I check up on them later, I see Kitty snoozing on our porch but Frankie's nowhere to be found. I called for him over and over again but not answer.

So I packed up the baby and we started walking around the house, calling Frankie's name. I expected to see Frankie's head pop up in the distance and then him bounding back home. But no answer. Now as many of you know, we're surrounded by large lots of open land that's also home to rattlesnakes, coyotes, and bobcats so I started to get worried. As the hours passed, all I could think of was an injured Frankie curled beneath a shrub, waiting for me to come save him. It was absolutely heartwrenching.

Evenutally, after hours of searching with a screaming baby, I had to give up. As I sat at home, thinking of a world without Frankie, I did the only thing left to do...I finished the pint of Haggen Daz in the freezer.

I guess it's a good thing that I did that because soon afterward I got a call. Frankie was safe and sound at another neighbor's house. Thank God!

It looks like Frankie's going to be living a more restricted lifestyle for a while. (Send your file-laden cakes to Kitty's

attention because the warden's one tough cookie.)

RIP Trusty iMac

...You served me well.

One of the reasons for my trip to SF was to pick up my new computer -- an iBook. I had my sister get it for me and I guess just in time because my iMac just crapped out. With my iMac gone, there's a big hole in the corner that this iBook just can't fill. But that's okay. I have plenty of stuff to fill the space. I just need to dust it off first.

"Suppose" you ask? I know, everything seemed to be going on schedule until I started feeling dizzy. As my world continue to spin, it became harder and harder to keep my lunch down. Yeah, puking can quickly derail plans. Usually though, once you toss your cookies, you feel better. However, my world continued spinning. I hoped a nap would solve the problem but it just lead to another bout of vomit.

Finally, hours later, I felt more normal...even better after the chicken soup that Chris made for me. Unfortunately, it was too late to hit the road (and make the 8am ceremony).

So, let me say it now...CONGRATULATIONS JAMIE! Chris and I are very proud of you. From now on, I'll have Chris call you "Master Jamie" in honor of your degree.

Entenmann's to the Extreme

Lately, I've been craving baked goods. Case in point, not only did I recently bake (low fat but still delivious) brownies AND cupcakes but I bought an angel food cake and donuts from the grocery store.

I'm a pig...I know. But in my gluttony I did notice something of interest. Not sure if any of you have notice this but Entenmann's makes a donut 4-pack called "Grab 'Ems". Actually, Entenmann's calls it their "extra tasty donut 4-pack." I guess it's so amazing they had to package these goodies under a special label -- "Entenmann's EXTREME". To further emphasize how cutting edge these donuts are they placed on the packaging a photo of a skateboarder who's catching air on his Entenmann's skateboard. Wow! That's EXTREME! But have no fear, while this kid may represent Entenmann's EXTREME, he's still responsible enough to wear a helmet.

Oh. Did I mention that these EXTREME donuts were glazed Old Fashion's. Well, actually that was also renamed to "Glazed Buttermilk". Ah...they think of everything.

By the way, in case you were thinking of using the name "Grab 'Ems"...don't. Entenmann's has trademarked the phrase. (Those crafty devils!)

Septic Shock

Who knew doing laundry could be so dangerous?

I figured something was wrong when I noticed sewage backing out of my shower and tub drains. Ewww! The plunger only made matters worse. The only perceive cause was the washing machine, which had just emptied it's first rinse cycle and was about the start another. Quickly I turned it off. Luckily, very little of the filthy water leaked onto the floor. The rest remained contained in their tubs. Then I called Chris.

My hero arrived home a couple hours later. It was almost 10 at night and he had a 6am call but he proceeded to take a snake (a plumer's auger used to clear drains) and cleared out every drain in the house, including the septic tanks vent, which is on the roof. No luck.

Then he went outside and, with a shovel, began to uncover the lid to the **gulp** septic tank. While it was wasn't as smelly as he expected, it did appear to be full. Oh boy! There will be no showers tonight. Time to crank up the hot tub! Sure we would be soaping up but it was relaxing, none the less.

Chris didn't get to be until 1am.

This morning I looked in the Country Journal (the local free paper) and called one of the septic companies listed -- Acton Sanitation. "When would you be able to come out to empty our tank and how much would it cost?" That would depend on our tank --was it concrete or metal -- because the problem could just be a clog. I told Jim, the man from Acton Sanitation, that I didn't know and he offered to come over to check it out for me. (He was just down the road from our house.)

As promised, he arrived in about 10 minutes. And, after checking into our septic tank (which is metal), he confirmed that it was just a clog. He took a rod from out of his truck, jabbed at the pipe in the tank and VOILA! The tank began to guggle to life. "So does this mean the drains in my house are now working again?" "Yup."

That was it. Go figure.

You know what's even more amazing? Jim didn't charge me a thing. Talk about a super nice guy. I guess I can chalk it up to "country livin'".

So, what's with guys and the middle finger? (Now I say "guys" because I have yet to see a group of women demontrating to each other various ways of giving each other the bird.)

(Not that I'd do it myself, but...) I understand the motivation behind flipping off someone on the freeway. But what's with the weird bonding ritual of flipping each other off for fun? (McNutt, care to chime in?)

Addison Update

Chris and I heard that Addison's second bone marrow transplant took! He's become more active and is even walking on his own.

Thanks for all your positive thoughts. Keep that energy going so Addison will be well enough to come home in a month or so.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Parker

Happy Birthday to you Mrs. Parker.
Happy Birthday to you.

If you've been watching daytime TV (or the Food Network) you've probably seen this hilarious ad for Brawny paper towels. If, unlike me, you have a job...then you've got to go to http://www.brawnyman.com/products/ads.html

Check out the first commercial -- "Role Reversal": A man with the same strong, yet sensitive qualities as Brawny paper towels prepares a special evening for the woman in his life

Oh. And don't skimp. Watch the 30 second version. It's much better than the 15 second one.

BTW, let me know if anyone of you have the techinical savy to save a mpeg of this. I've got to have this for future viewing.

Houston, We Have Lift Off

We can all rest easy now. Eight days later and Parker's FINALLY poo'd. PHEW!

I guess now I'll have to restart the clock and see how long the next one takes. Maybe this will be come a "regular" thing. (Ha! Ha! I had to say it.) Maybe we'll be blessed with just one stinky diaper a week as opposed to a daily one.

Well, like a push-up stick he pop, not just out of his bed but out of his clothes. He was so upset and yet so cute...I had to take a picture.

Where's Parker, you ask? See that blue foot on the left. That's him. As I said, this was the best shot we could get of several moving targets.

As you can see, Niko is a bit of a big baby and one of the reasons why I fretted about giving birth to a big baby during my preganancy. I mean, if my sister can have two, so can I. Now I realize that big baby gene is all Kevin's (Joanie's husband) fault. Phew!

Joanie mentioned that Niko's been a bit of a biter lately. To be honest, I think she just sees day care as a big smorgasbord and she's got to taste everyone.

That said, I'm sure when this picture was taken Niko's thinking "Baby! Get in my belly!"

Things become even more humorous when he's eating (imagine someone placing a very large cup over the food dish), following me (excuse me is that your collar or are you just happy to see me), or even just looking out the window (now imaging that large cup placed against the glass).

I liked this picture because it reminded me of someone sunbathing with one of those reflectors.

Well, Frankie is now officially less of a man...err...dog...err...he's been neutered. To add to the humilation, he has to wear a funnel around his neck to prevent him from opening his stiches.

Poor Frankie. The funnel makes him a bit disoriented. I guess it takes about a day for him to get used to it. Until then he bumps into things as he's not fully aware of the new width of his head. Often, though, he just stands not sure where he can go.

One Month

And what have I learned? 1)There’s nothing like a happy baby. 2)Even better, there’s nothing like a sleeping baby. 3)Never assume a quiet baby in a crib is asleep. 4)Babies at Parker’s age are nearsighted.

With this knowledge in mind, I can never just cross the crib without first checking if Parker’s actually asleep. If I were to cross the crib even though he’s contently (not crying) awake, he would be set off, insisting on immediate attention. Consequently, any plans I had of writing, housework (pshaw! Yeah right.), feeding the cat, excercising the dog, etc. are now derailed. That said, I must now confess that in order to get past the baby I must make the most of his poor eyesight and limited mobility by…yes…getting down on all fours and crawling past his crib below his range of detection.

Talk about an awful mother but I figure I might as well take advantage of the situation while I still can. Soon enough, my army belly crawl will not evade detection and I’ll have to think of some other sneaky way to find a little time for myself.

Highs & Lows

The warmest feeling has to be holding a content baby in your arms. Trusting, he sleeps in your arms knowing that he’s right where he wants to be. Two have become one.

The loneliest feeling has to be holding a crying baby in your arms. Unhappy, he sobs but his cries are in a language you don’t understand. You’re unable to tear down the wall of tears, which stands between you.

You’re lucky you’re so darn cute

It’s 3am and you’ve been crying for the last half hour for no perceivable reason. I want to give up but when I look down upon you’re face – even though it’s gripped with anguish – I can’t help but think…you’re lucky you’re so darn cute.

Later that day, I make three consecutive diaper changes because you immediately soil each new diaper. When you christen the experience by shooting a perfect golden arc onto my shirt, I can’t help but think…you’re lucky you’re so darn cute.

Finally, when you smack and pop while you eat, as if you were chewing a wad of gum, I can't help but think...Holy Smokes, kid! Can you give Mom a break?!

Keep Thinking Positive Thoughts

One more thing...with all the recent excitement, I failed to mention that Addison's bone marrow transplant did not take. That said, he's been undergoing a more agressive chemotherapy in preparation for a 2nd transplant, which is scheduled for today. Please keep him in your thoughts for these next couple of days. Hopefully, this second transplant will be a success and will allow him to come home.

Quick Update

Since Parker didn't return to his original birth weight (7lb, 1oz) by his 2-week pediatricia visit, we had to schedule another visit a week later (yesterday) for another weigh-in. **drum roll, please** As of yesterday, Parker has now reached his birth weight. YEA!! Of course, (I don't remember the actual percentiles but) Parker is still a little guy so we have to make sure he's eating often...something that I need to keep in mind when he's crying at 3am for food.

NOTE: His cord fell off a couple of days ago so now his cute little belly button is visible.

And Then Some...

I forgot to mention that our rough night last night was further complicated by Ms. Fussypants -- Silly, who's not only been sick lately (diarrhea) but has also been a bit PO'd about the two newest members of the family -- and her decision to take a crap in the den.

Yeah, there will be no sleep for us.

Rough Night

Mr fussybutt didn't want to go to sleep last night. I feel bad for Chris because he probably only got about 3 hours of sleep before heading out for work. Hopefully this won't become a habit. In the meantime, I have to make it a point to take a nap or two during the day in preparation for the all nighter.

ZIP!

Did you hear that? It's me zipping up a pair of pants that I haven't been able to wear since my 5th month of pregancy. Normal clothes, HERE I COME! So far, since D-day, I've lost about 20lbs (7lb 1oz of that was Parker). The weight has been slowly dripping off as my body returns to it's normal self. ROCK ON!

Parker & Silly

So all our books mention when introducing a new baby to pets, you should bring home a blanket that the baby's used and have the animals smell it in order to get used to the scent.

When Parker got home last Friday, Frankie was at a neighbor's house so all we had to contend with was Silly, our cat. However, rather than just allowing her to smell Parker's shirt, Chris decided that Silly needed to try it on. **sigh**

As you can probably guessed, Silly wasn't a big fan of her new clothes, especially since the shirt had the flip over sleeves that covers a baby's hands so they don't scratch themselves. She looked like she was in a kitty straight jacket. Granted, it was hard to keep a straight face watching her as she shook her paws (as if kitty litter was stuck in them) with each step. But I felt her humiliation, nonetheless.

That said, Silly has remained cautious around Parker. And maybe that's a good thing. As of yet, she hasn't hopped into his crib and covered it with cat hair.

Holy Crap!

Okay, so I did get a small warning about this but who knew it would be such a big deal. Let’s just say after birth, you come to a greater appreciate the "regularity" of “daily functions”. That said, with the help of various pills, fiber additives, and (yes) a potty training seat (the whole process cried out for more “support” than a normal toilet seat could offer), I think I’m finally on the path to regularity. Phew!

Now I’m sure you’re asking yourself why I’m writing about this. Well, I figure fairs only fair as I fully intend to keep you up-to-date with Parker’s many milestones. Also, in a couple of years from now, when I place his little rear on our Spongebob potty seat, you’ll know the story behind that nostalgic look that will undoubtedly flush over my face, (Ahhh, good times!) May the power of Spongebob be with you, my son!

Levels Are Falling

The results are in. Parker’s bilirubin levels are falling – from 11.4 (on Saturday) to 8 (on Monday. That’s good news. Hopefully, he’ll be in the clear by his 2-week exam.

Here's shot of us on our last day at the hospital. Three nights later and Parker has only been difficult 1 out of the 3. Actually, last night I was the one waking him up to eat when he needed to. (Payback!) I'm also happy to report that Chris has become a champ at diaper changing, which is good because after an hour of feeding it's nice to hand Parker off to Chris to finish job. (Yeah baby! Two against one. I know it's unfair but you're just going to have to get used to it.)

Heath wise, when we left the hospital, Parker's bilirubin count was a bit high. ("Bilirubin is formed from the body's normal breakdown of red blood cells, and it is usually cleared very quickly from the blood. Newborns tend to have higher bilirubin levels because their immature liver is not a very good at removing it, and they produce more of it than the liver can handle."*) This buildup leads to jaundice. We have our first pediatrician appointment today. **fingers crossed** Let's hope his levels have gone down.

More Delivery Details

Dare I even say it was easy going? Yes, pre-epidural, there was pain but it remained managable. (The birthing class techniques came in handy after all.) And I never once screamed at Chris, blaming him for "ruining my life" or whatever else they say in movies/TV shows.

Once the epi was administred, I could actually relax and experience the event as a joyious occasion and yes, deliver online updates during the event. (Not sure if you've been to Henry Mayo Hospital but the beds have a flat screen terminal that easily allowes you to watch TV, play video games, listen to music, and, of course, connect to the internet. Cool, huh?)

The real work started at 11:20 when, at 10cm dialation, I would have to begin pushing. (No more time to blog.)

Talk about a weird sensation, trying to bare (bear?) down on an area that's now devoid of most sensations. You just have to mentally focus on that region and hope you're doing the right thing. The one thing I was sure of was that with each push my face was probably red and puffy like a raspberry. (I'm surprised I didn't blow a vessel.) Parker's big head was making things difficult. They eventually put me on oxygen to keep up my energy as I pushed for three, ten second periods during each contraction. In between each contraction I had a couple of minutes to rest and hopefully recharge for the next bout.

Chris was an excellent coach the whole time -- physically supporting me as he counted through the contractions. Two hours later, at 1:28pm, Parker finally emerged and Chris was able to cut his son's umbillcal cord, detaching him from the mother ship. (What I should realy do is get Chris to add an entry regarding his front row experience.)

You'll have to trust me until I get a chance to upload a photo (ETA tomorrow) -- he's a real cutie. And even better, he's pretty mellow so far!

Wednesday, March 09, 2005

He's here!

I'll write more later but here are the basic stats:
born at 1:28
He's 7lb 1oz (Phew! Smaller than expected.)
19-1/2 inches long

9 CENTIMETERS!

Holy cow! This is going quicker than expected.

Napping for the last hour

Finally! That said I forgot to mention that they broke my water about an hour ago. The fluid was clear, which is a good sign. Parker's still doing fine.

By the way, if anyone sees a crazed, Asian woman driving around in a rental...that's my mom, who's flying in from San Francisco and she's obviously lost. Please help her find the northbound 5.

Thanks.

I love modern medicine!

6:20ish - I'm about 3 to 4 cm dialated. You know what that means...I can now get the epidural. Nurse! Hook me up!

40 minites later, I'm happy as a clam.

Chris wisely refrained from jokes during the procedure...not to mention the "Holy Crap!" comments at the size of the needle that they stuck in my back.

Speaking of pain, I guess I should mention that Chris was scheduled for a root canal this morning. Instead, he's going to have to use some of the birthing class techniques to manage HIS pain. Doh!

This IS it

We're going to have the baby! As much as I want to call everyone with the news, I have to restrain myself because it's 3 in the morning.

This may be it

Contractions started around dinner time. We finally left for the hospital at about 1:40am, arriving at our destination about 45 minutes later. So far, I'm 2cm dialated. The nurse is calling the doctor to see if we're good to go. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Still Holding

Well, Parker's still hanging in there. I'm slightly disappointed about that because I secretly wanted him to be born today because today is my dad's birthday. That would have been a cool bit of fate; however, like my sister, our first borns miss that fateful day. (Luxi was born on March 16th; a little over a week later.)

One interesting note...my doctor wants to see my when I take my next non-stress test at the hospital. Could the 10th be THE DAY?! You'll have to just hold your breath and wait 'n' see.

All Around Update

I had some strong cramping (but, in the end, not contractions) on Saturday night that sent Chris sailing around the house plugging in all his A/V equipment that he hasn’t charged yet. I guess NOW we’re prepared for Parker’s arrival.

Yesterday, I had another non-stress test and Parker’s still hanging in there. I have my ob-gyn appt today so **fingers crossed** maybe we’ll get the word that our little man is coming soon. (At 7lb 13+oz…I surely hope so!)

As for Addison, he’s doing really well. Visitors don’t have to wear masks around him any more, which should make for a more kid-friendly environment. He may even be able to come home earlier. Keep sending your positive thoughts.

The Proud Graduate

Originally uploaded by Car2nGrl.
Yes, Frankie is now a proud graduate of puppy school. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend because I was home waiting for the Fed-Ex guy but Chris gave me the play-by-play of the last class and festivities.

His final exam consisted of three exercises:
1) Puppy Push-ups: a series of consecutive SIT-DOWN-SIT commands
2) Wait: walking at your side and followed by stopping and sitting when you say WAIT
3) Leave It: ignoring an item of interested (usually a treat) on command

All of which, Frankie performed with flying colors. (Of course, we did bring our secret treat weapon...Moo Moo Q's to hold Frankie's attention. What are Moo Moo Q's, you ask. Dehydrated beef lung. YUM!)

I hope you're all proud of Frankie. Next class is...Basic Dog Training, which starts in April. (Now if they just offered a "How to Stop Your Dog From Eating Cat Barf and Poo" class, the world would be a better place.)

Parker Update

So many appointment this week and you've just been left in the dark. Sorry about that.

MONDAY: Non-stress Test #4. All's well. Parker still had a strong heartbeat and, as a little bonus (and I say that sarcastically) they check to see how dialated I was. I'm not going to even explain how that was done...let's just keep it at "uncomfortable". That said...Zip, Nada, Zero. I'm not dialated one bit. The nurse did point out that I was having contractions while I was there. Really, I didn't feel a thing. (No. Honest. I'm not being sarcastic. I have yet to feel any contractions, even those false ones that the books keep talking about.)

WEDNESDAY: My ob-gyn is back from vacation so I paid him a visit. Parker's hearbeat is still going strong and it speeds up when the doctor pushes on him. (Another good sign.) Measuring my stomach, my doctor uttered one of my fears..."Big Baby". Arggggg! I know! Even though my belly button hasn't become an outie, the skin in that area is so thin it feels like it's going to tear open (yes, like that scene from "Alien", trust me I can't get that out of my mind). Maybe an outie isn't so bad after all. (Did I just say that?!) I did ask my doctor about not feeling contractions and he assured me that when the time comes...oh, I'll feel them. I hope it's sooner than later. I have a 45 minute drive to the hospital to make and would appreciate as much lead time as possible.

THURSDAY: Non-stress Test #5. Parker's heart is still going strong. Afterwards, I visited my ultrasound doctor. The good news is that my amniotic fluid has increased -- to the 13/14 range now. So no more ultrasounds are needed unless I go past my delivery date. And Parker's weight you ask? I knew last week's 1 ounce weight gain was too small. This week he's at 7 POUNDS 13 OUNCES! Holy Smokes! Is anyone else worried about the size of this baby...especially when this estimate is +/- a pound. The ultrasound doctor suggested I walk more to encourage the baby to make it's way out. Hey, the LA Marathon's this weekend...isn't it? Hmmmm. I might just be that desperate.
